Bodegas Viñátigo - Gual Tenerife Canary Islands (2021)
Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain
About the wine
First brought to the Canary Islands by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Juan Jesús discovered the Gual grape on the island of El Hierro in the late 1990s. Known as Bual on the island of Madeira, Gual is very much at home in Tenerife, where the bright sunshine brings the grape to full ripeness and allows the aromas to shine through; tropical fruits, jasmine and layers of delicate smokiness, invoking the volcanic soils of the Canary Islands.
"The 2021 Gual from Viñátigo is a touch reductive when first opened, which is the style of many white wines from Tenerife. With a little air, it blossoms beautifully to deliver a very complex blend of lime, tart orange, iodine, salty minerality, beeswax, lemongrass, citrus peel and a smoky topnote." - Perrine's notes
"A wonderfully aromatic wine with layers of smoky notes, jasmine, melon and tropical pineapple on the nose. Concentrated flavors are complemented by a rich, buttery palate and an everlasting finish." - winemaker's notes
"Spain’s island wines are becoming more popular, and with this rich, multidimensional white from Tenerife you can see why. It’s 100% Gual (better known as Bual) and is buttery and textured. Fermented in steel and concrete egg, it shows a raft of tropical characters, including mango and guava, as well as straw, smoke and green tea. Laser-focused acidity pins it all together." - 91 points, Decanter
Pairs well with Pork, Poultry, Rich Fish, and Shellfish.
