Black Star Farms - 'Arcturos' Cabernet Franc (2020) Will Surprise You
Get to know Cabernet Franc
If you've been drinking red wine for a minute, you've definitely run across your share of 'Cabernets.' You most likely had a Cabernet Sauvignon. While the Cabernet Franc is also a red wine, it has a dramatically different flavor profile. If you think Cab Savs are too harsh, keep reading. The Cab Franc might be your new bestie.
Cabernet Franc is lighter in both body (how it feels in your mouth) and color. Instead of the black fruits of the Cabernet Sauvignon, you'll taste more red fruits like strawberries and red plum in a Cab Franc, making it a little zippier with less tannin.
What Black Star Farms says about "Arcturos'
"This has been one of our most prominent red varieties for almost 15 years, and the grape never ceases to delight me. When we first started bottling it back in 1998, the variety had very little following, and most people had never heard of it. Now, the variety has become a fad, and you see its proud proclamation on wine labels from Bourgueil to California to Zurich. The truth is that this variety shines best with an extended growing season and in a cooler climate, which is basically what Michigan is all about!"
Winemaker's Notes
Wait, Cabernet Franc from... Michigan?
The Cabernet Franc grape actually ripens more easily in cooler climates. Michigan delivers on that front. It is also rich in unspoiled nature, with the longest freshwater coastline in the U.S. With lakes, hills, rolling plains, forests, and mountains, it has a broad diversity of flora that can influence the taste and aroma of the wines they produce.
Plus, don't be a snob. 😉
Enjoying Black Star Farms - 'Arcturos' Cabernet Franc (2020)
Take a deep inhale of sweet oak, freshly-tanned leather, and young bramble fruit lead before tasting fresh boysenberries and raspberry tea leaf. There's even a delicate spice if you look for it. This Cabernet Franc has a lot going on but isn't in-your-face about it.
